Scientific Name: Polyprion oxygeneios.
Also known as: Hapuku (New Zealand), Ara (Japan), Cernier de Nouvelle-Zelande, Merou (France), Vlachos (Greece), Cernia (Italy), Cherna (Spain).
Characteristics: Firm flesh of excellent eating quality. Suitable for all methods of cooking.
Description: Average length is 80 – 120 cm, and the average weight is 6 kg, usually ranging from 3 – 20 kg. Grey – blue to grey-brown above, white below with small scales.
Main Season: Available all year round but catches peak in mid winter, June – August.
